Tone policing is violent because it disrespects the humanity of the speaker by focusing on the method of delivery instead of the substance of the message.

One such example is the racism inherent in the "angry Black woman" trope. Black women are entitled to be angry about the dehumanization of our community, especially our children. They tackle media representations perpetuating and normalizing negative stereotypes that adultify and hypersexualize Black girls from early childhood. They also point out how commonly misogynoir shows up in so-called “liberal” and “progressive” spaces, including among white women and self-identified “feminists.”

Misogynoir is pervasive and has been indoctrinated globally, including by non-Black people of color, shaping and pushing out negative, anti-black, misogynistic tropes about Black women. These disrespectful stereotypes often undermine true allyship and is why Black women are understandably distrustful of “allies”
Sandy and Niko discuss the way Black women in America have been violently mistreated for the sake of medical knowledge and in the areas of reproductive rights and criminal justice, and had our contributions stolen and erased, for example in the “Me Too“ movement.

They discuss America’s history of demanding, extracting and feeling entitled to Black labor – particularly the labor of Black women – and for free.
